This HD-28V is a D-28 with a prewar-style design featuring forward-shifted scalloped braces, herringbone binding, and slotted diamond and square inlays. The current HD-28 is closer to the HD-28V's specifications, and this HD-28V was discontinued, but the modified V-neck and long saddle were not carried over to the HD-28. The modified V-neck and long saddle were not carried over to the HD-28, but they are now attracting renewed attention from fans who want a modified V-neck.
There are some dings, scratches, and scuffs, some flaking of the satin paint on the back of the neck, dulling of the plating on the pegs, and some age-related paint bumps on the wood/plastic joints and the center seam on the back, but there is no significant unsightly damage. The pegs have been replaced with gold-plated ones, and strap pins have been retrofitted at the heel of the neck.
There is no room for tightening the truss rod, but the neck is currently in good condition and does not interfere with playing. There are some scratches on the fingerboard around the frets that may be from fret repair. The frets have been rubbed together, and there is about 80% height remaining, so playability is perfect.
The sound is excellent, and the scallop brace gives a good response and the horsepower that is typical of the D-28. It has good balance from high notes to low notes, and is a gem recommended not only for singing accompaniment, but also for technical bluegrass guitarists.
