John Lennon of the Beatles loved to use J-160E made in 1962 at that time, but it was stolen during the tour, then he used J-160E made in 1964. We have just received John's second model J-160E (made in 1964) of the same year. It is a very popular period with its soundhole 2 ring specification, 17 degree head angle regular neck, and early 60's specs.
This model was designed to be an acoustico with P-90 pickups, so plywood body and ladder bracing were adopted as a "non-sounding instrument," but it has grown into a "sounding instrument" over the years. However, unlike veneer models such as the J-45 and Hummingbird, it has been sublimated to a unique sound with a sense of compression.
The pegs are Cruson 2-line/2-cob keystone type, and the pickguard is a small toe-toys type.
The body has many scratches and dents due to its age, and the paint has fine and deep weather checks throughout. The brownish sunburst color makes the vintage style stand out even more.
The top has a bulge on the lower part of the body, and there are many dents, both large and small, but there does not seem to be a top crack that can penetrate through. The sides also show a lot of weather checking, and there are some cracks in the clear finish. The back has two cracks with a step of more than 10 cm at the top, about 8 cm on the left side at the bottom, and about 10 cm on the right side. Both of these cracks have been glued and repaired in the past, and they are firmly adhered as if they have been repaired for many years.
The bridge plate inside the top has been reinforced with an extra plate where the ball end of the strings hit in order to correct the wear caused by the ball end of the strings. The neck binding on the first string side has an additional joint.
The frets have been replaced by overbinding in recent years. The nut has also been replaced.
The neck is in good condition with only weather checks and dents, and is clean considering its age.
The bridge is an adjustable saddle type, so you can adjust the string height as you like. Even with the current recommended setting, there is still room to raise and lower the strings.
The pegs are still functional, although there is some bending and play. The truss rod cover and screw tops have probably been replaced.
The original P-90 pickups are still functional, although the pole pieces are rusted. Passive pickups are noisy due to its structure, but you can enjoy very unique electric guitar sound. It is also fun to connect it to an electric guitar amp to prevent feedback.
This is a very rare and valuable model.
