USED Gibson / Southern Jumbo 1968 [12]

The success of the Southern Jumbo and Hummingbird, which had been the top model of the J-45 in the same silhouette until the early 60's, made the cherry sunburst finish the standard for the J-45, and this S.J. boldly imitated the body shape and even the pickguard. The S.J. was relaunched as a completely new model, with not a trace of the original. The main difference between the S.J. and the Hummingbird is that the S.J. continues to be a Gibson medium scale, whereas most H.B.'s are long scale. Therefore, the sound tends to be more like a 45, with a loose but not overstressed feel. It is also interesting to note that the sunburst color continued to be used throughout the 60's as well.

Condition: There is a crack correction symmetrically centered under the top bridge. The bridge has been replaced with a fixed saddle, and each bolt of the bridge plate has been removed and filled with holes. There is evidence of intonation adjustment by filling and reopening the saddle slit in the new bridge. It is often commented that a fixed saddle makes the bridge sound more boxy, unlike an adjustable bridge. However, the adjustable sound, or rather the Late 60s sound, is still there. The sound quality peculiar to this period is not only created by the saddle, but also by a complex combination of various factors, such as the lightweight neck due to the narrow neck, the change in the size of the bridge plate, the size and shape of the bracing, and so on. There are traces of pickups that were installed, a battery box tape mark on the neck block, and the end pins have been converted to conversion pins. The nut has been replaced, the frets have been driven taller than the original, and there is partial wear in the low position. The pegs are generally 6 independent type as it is a higher model of J-45, but this one is original and plate type, which is in the category of Gibson Al-Al.
