USED Gibson / 1955 Southern Jumbo [03]

We have received a vintage 1950s Southern Jumbo. Based on the factory order number, it is believed to have been manufactured in 1955.
Introduced in 1943 as the premium model above the J-45, the "Southern Jumbo" stands alongside the J-45 as a flagship model of round-shouldered acoustic guitars.

It features a crown inlay on the headstock, a spruce top, a mahogany body (sides and back), a mahogany neck with a rosewood fingerboard, and double parallelogram fingerboard inlays.
There is no serial number engraved on the back of the headstock; instead, it is printed on the neck block inside the body.
It is characterized by a powerful, punchy attack, delivering a sound unique to well-aged vintage instruments.

The area around the nut near the fingerboard on the headstock has been shaved down to sit flush with the nut, and it has been refinished with an old-style lacquer. There are also signs of old over-lacquer applied throughout the instrument, and the bridge is coated with lacquer.
There are signs of repair along the edge of the pickguard on the upper left of the top, and a patch has been applied to the inside of this area.
Significant aging of the finish is evident, with paint peeling in several places. Approximately 60% of the frets remain, which is on the low side.
The tuning pegs, saddle, and endpin have been replaced. There is a bulge on the top, and the string action is approximately 2.6 mm at the 12th fret on the 6th string and about 2.3 mm at the 12th fret on the 1st string.

The pickguard shows signs of warping, previous repairs, and cracks, but it appears to have been re-glued, and there are no large areas where it has peeled off.
The truss rod cover is warped.

It produces a powerful, classic Gibson sound and has been thoroughly restored, making it a guitar that can continue to be played actively.
