USED FENDER / 1971 Precision Bass 3-Tone Sunburst [04]

A 1971 Fender Precision Bass in 3-Tone Sunburst has just arrived!

Following its acquisition by CBS, Fender refined many manufacturing methods and parts used to increase production efficiency.
They began bulk-purchasing and using large quantities of parts at once, and in amplifiers, they shifted from vacuum tubes to solid-state, steering the company into a new era.

Based on the serial number, neck date, and pot date, this instrument can be identified as a 1971 model.
The body is crafted from American basswood with subtle grain patterns, while the neck features flat-sawn maple with a rosewood fingerboard.
The headstock features the modern "Fender PRECISION BASS" logo along with the PAT NO. used from 1968 through mid-1976, and is equipped with nickel tuners bearing the Fender relief logo.

The neck, with a nut width of approximately 40mm, features a round-profile rosewood fingerboard with pearloid dot position markers.
The frets appear to have been recently replaced and are jumbo frets with ample height.
The neck date, "5 07 71 B," indicates that it was manufactured in 1971.

It adopts the body shape introduced after 1968, which lacks the bulge beside the neck pocket. The use of American basswood for the body indicates it was made before 1972. The pickguard is 4-ply vinyl tortoiseshell, and the bridge has stainless steel saddles with a longer screw for the 1st string.

The pickups have gray bobbins, but I was unable to identify the specific model or production year.

The volume pot has been replaced with a more recent one, but the tone pot is a Stackpole Pot from week 16 of 1971, identified by the code "304-7116".

Finished in the classic 3-tone sunburst, this instrument features a beautiful gradient fading from the outer edges.
Overall, there are some weather checking, scratches, and dents in the finish due to age, but there are no issues with playability. The frets have good height, and I have confirmed that the truss rod turns 60 degrees in both directions.
