1966 Gibson ES-330TD Sunburst

In 1959—the year following 1958, when the ES-335TD, Flying V, Explorer, and Les Paul Standard were updated to feature a sunburst finish, giving rise to the “Burst”—the ES-330 was introduced. Alongside the ES-345 and ES-355, which were positioned as higher-end models than the ES-335, the ES-330 featured a hollow-body construction and P-90 pickups.
This model is favored by a wide range of artists, including bluesman Slim Harpo, The Rolling Stones’ guitarist Keith Richards, legendary jazz guitarist Grant Green, contemporary blues artist Gary Clark Jr., and Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke.

This instrument has a “2” stamped beneath the serial number “850953,” indicating that it was shipped as a second-grade instrument.
Additionally, based on the one-piece mahogany neck, the joint at the 16th fret, and the 40mm nut width, we can determine that this is a 1966 model.

The headstock features simple decoration consisting solely of the Gibson logo, and the tuners are Kluson Deluxe White Button models. The pegs on the 6th, 5th, and 2nd strings are slightly bent, but this does not affect playability.
The solid mahogany neck features small-block inlays and retains its original 22 frets.

The 16-inch-wide, 1 3/4-inch-thick body, which features a full-hollow construction using laminated maple similar to the ES-335TD, incorporates chrome hardware, including a wired Gibson ABR-1 bridge with a nylon saddle, a Blanko tailpiece, and a gold top hat with a metal top.

It is equipped with black-and-white-wired P-90 Dogear pickups, a specification used since 1965. The 2-Volume/2-Tone/3-Way Selector controls use CTS pots and ceramic capacitors; the only pot date we were able to confirm was “1376XXX” on the Bridge Volume pot.

The finish is a beautiful sunburst with just the right amount of fading, creating an exquisite color gradient.
Combined with its weather checking, this guitar exudes the elegant atmosphere characteristic of vintage Gibsons.

Overall, there are numerous weather checks and dents due to age. The jack area features a plate, and nearby there are marks suggesting the use of an Orange Squeezer as well as traces of filled screw holes. The pickguard is warped, and there are signs that screw holes have been filled all the way into the body.
The frets measure approximately 0.7–0.8 mm, and we have confirmed that the truss rod turns 60 degrees in both directions. The guitar is currently in good playing condition with no muting issues.
