The single-cut Les Paul, which ceased production in 1960, was revived in 1968 following a resurgence in popularity within the music scene of that era. This reissue model is a meticulous recreation by Gibson Custom of the Les Paul Custom specifications from that first year of re-production.
Unlike the all-mahogany construction of the 1950s, this model features a solid body with no weight relief, combining a two-piece plain maple top with a one-piece mahogany back. The rich low-to-midrange and abundant sustain characteristic of mahogany are complemented by the clear attack and excellent projection of the maple top, producing the powerful rock sound that would be passed down to later Les Paul Custom models.
The solid mahogany neck features the Authentic ’68 Medium C-Shape, which offers moderate thickness while remaining comfortable to grip. Combined with the ebony fingerboard, it delivers quick attack and a tight response.
The guitar is equipped with two ’68 Custom humbuckers, as indicated by the “CS68 Aged 107130” sticker on the back. The front pickup delivers a lead tone with rich thickness and lustre that retains its definition, while the rear pickup produces a powerful drive sound with a sharp attack and bite.In the center position, the characteristics of both pickups blend in perfect balance, allowing you to enjoy a three-dimensional tone with clear separation between each string, even during chord play.
The wiring features a hand-wired harness equipped with Black Beauty capacitors. Details emblematic of late 1960s Les Paul Custom models—such as the ABR-1 bridge, stopbar, and Kluson Waffleback tuners—have been meticulously recreated.
The dignified appearance is exceptional, combining a Gloss Ebony finish with a lustrous nitrocellulose lacquer, multilayer binding, mother-of-pearl block inlays, diamond head inlays, and gold hardware. Although it features a Gloss finish, the pickups are genuine CS68s marked “Aged.”
Although there are slight signs of use, such as scuff marks on the body, the guitar remains in beautiful condition.
