The Sabre was introduced shortly after the success of the StingRay.

It’s a model that strongly inherits the DNA of Leo Fender’s design era—one might even call it another answer to the question. Featuring the classic combination of an ash body and a maple neck, it’s equipped with two large humbuckers. Thanks to the series/parallel switch and tone control, it offers a wide range of sounds, from powerful lows to crisp mids. The neck displays beautiful grain, which, combined with its vintage-style finish, creates a striking appearance.

The instrument we’ve received is a distinctive piece that combines the body of a 1979 Sabre with the neck of a 1979 StingRay. The neck joint has been modified from the original four-point mounting to a three-point mounting, resulting in specifications that differ from a standard Sabre. The potentiometers bear an ’81 date stamp, suggesting that parts were replaced and modifications were made at “System Craft,” a bass specialty shop in Osaka.

While the pickups appear to be original, the volume pot has been replaced with an ’86 model, and the mini-switch and jack have also been swapped out. The mini-switch functions as a pickup selector and also allows for series/parallel switching of both the front and rear pickups, offering a wide range of sound variations distinct from a standard Sabre.
In addition to the string guide having been repositioned, the strap pins and mute have also been replaced.
The pickguard is chipped near the neck on the 4th string side, and a screw is missing.
The plating on the volume and bass knobs is peeling.
There is a crack at the neck joint. The neck shows fine weather checking.
The body has discoloration, dents, and chipped paint, and the headstock shows signs of sun fading; it exhibits wear and tear commensurate with its age.

The nut and frets were replaced after the guitar was received, and the fingerboard surface was refinished as part of that process. Additionally, since the truss rod nut was stripped, it was machined to metric specifications and repaired.

The neck has a reverse bow on the 4th string side, a forward bow on the 1st string side, and a kink, resulting in twisting and waviness. There are currently no issues with playability. While the truss rod can still be adjusted, there is very little adjustment range remaining.
