USED LUDWIG / L-405 Piccolo Snare Drum 13×3 inches (Modified) [12]

A modified LUDWIG L-405 Piccolo Snare Drum (13×3 inches) has arrived!

Based on the serial number, this is a later model believed to have been manufactured around 1976 or later.
Ludwig’s rare “L-405 Supraphonic Piccolo Snare Drum”
While featuring the same Radialloy shell as the classic LM400 and LM402 models, this drum delivers the sharp response and excellent projection unique to its small 13"×3" diameter and shallow shell design. It features the tight attack characteristic of a piccolo snare, yet offers a moderate sense of openness thanks to its 6-tension configuration, resulting in a rich tone that belies its size. It’s ideal not only for funk, pop, and use as a second snare, but also for players seeking the distinctive sound of a vintage Ludwig.
However... this particular drum has undergone numerous modifications. First, all the lugs have been replaced with single-point mounting types. The strainer and hoops are original, but the snare wires have been changed to a non-original 16-strand configuration.
The hoops are believed to be the original 1.6mm thickness, but because the snare wire holes are misaligned, the snare wires have been replaced with tape-style ones. It has been adjusted so that no strain is placed on the snare wires even when they are in a straight position. The lugs, which might be a concern for some, are in a condition that can easily withstand high pitches, and the set can be used without issue even at higher volumes. Volume is also well-maintained. The sound character lives up to the expectation of “What if a Ludwig steel shell were made into a Piccolo?”
You can enjoy the unique sound of the Radialloy shell and fully experience the crisp, snappy response characteristic of a Piccolo. The snare’s response is excellent, with no issues regarding bite.
The number of these models in circulation has plummeted. Given that Ludwig has recently garnered attention for reissuing its steel-shell drum sets, this particular set is one we’d love to see active drummers use on stage.
Although it has been modified, this makes it even easier to use in live performances; it’s a gem in “player’s condition” that lets you casually enjoy the sound of a vintage Ludwig.
Signs of use; some modifications have been made, but it is playable as-is.
