Ted McCarty left a great mark on the electric guitar world in the late 1950s. The McCarty model, born from the relationship between Mr. McCarty and Paul Reed Smith, blends the technology and design of PRS Guitars with the essence of the great guitars of the golden age. The bound 22-fret neck is moderately thick-walled to enhance tone and sustain, and features special 58/15 LT pickups that have undergone a TCI (tuned capacitance & inductance) process. The 58/15 LT is also a vintage-style pickup, focusing on clarity and midrange, combined with a push/pull tone control and a 3-way toggle switch for a wide range of sonic variations.

And the McCarty model features brass studs and vintage-style tuners.

The McCarty model is a very simple guitar design," says McCarty. "Everything that touches the strings is the most important element of the guitar's sound. That is specifically the bridge, nut, and tuners. So in developing our McCarty model, we've up-dated these parts, which has allowed us to significantly improve the tone." Paul Reed Smith said.

In the late 1980s, Paul Reed Smith consulted with Ted McCarty on guitar design and construction techniques, an exchange that later led to the release of the first McCarty in 1994, McCarty guitars incorporate all the skills and knowledge Paul acquired from Ted, as well as Paul's own experience as a guitar builder.
