A 1968 Fender Precision Bass Sunburst has just arrived!

Introduced in 1951 as the world’s first electric bass, the Fender Precision Bass quickly gained popularity in a market previously dominated by acoustic basses, thanks to its manageable solid-body design, 34-inch scale neck, and 20 frets.
Initially, it had an appearance similar to the Telecaster, featuring a blonde finish, through-body strings, and single-coil pickups. However, as the Stratocaster debuted in 1954 and gained popularity, the Precision Bass also underwent specification changes, with significant modifications to the headstock shape, body contour, and split pickups.
Although it has undergone numerous minor changes since then, it remains a model that enjoys enduring popularity to this day.

After Fender was acquired by CBS around 1965, the company shifted its focus to production efficiency, leading to refinements in many manufacturing methods and the parts used. They began sourcing and using large quantities of parts at once and shifted from tube amplifiers to solid-state amplifiers, steering the company into a new era.

This instrument is a 1968 Precision Bass featuring the CBS logo.
It features an alder body, a maple neck, and a round-profiled rosewood fingerboard, and is constructed using a four-point detachable neck joint.
The headstock features the so-called “CBS Modern Logo” (Fender PRECISION BASS/PAT. 2,573,254 2,968,204 3,143,028 2,976,755) and is equipped with clover-style tuners bearing the Fender relief logo. A strap pin is located on the back of the headstock.

The neck, with a nut width of approximately 41 mm, features 20 medium-jumbo frets and pearloid dot position markers. The neck date is “5 SEP 68 B,” indicating that this is a 1968 Precision B-neck.
The body, which features a small bulge next to the neck pocket, has been contoured; there are signs that the bridge mounting position was adjusted, and the nut has been replaced. The bridge is made of stainless steel with a single string groove, consistent with the specification used from 1968 onward.

The guitar is equipped with split single-coil pickups featuring black bobbins and cross-wound coils, and additional pickup cushions have been added. The backs of the pickups are marked “10-4-68” and “10 4 68,” confirming that both were manufactured in 1968.

The 4-ply vinyl tortoiseshell pickguard is fitted with volume, tone, and jack controls; the circuit features CTS pots dated“137 6642” and “137 6642,” indicating that CTS pots manufactured in Week 42 of 1966 are used. The capacitors are original 0.05 MFD yellow ceramic capacitors (D .80-20 .05 50V), and the jack is a Switchcraft model.

The finish is the classic 3-Tone Sunburst, but it has faded significantly and now appears more like a 2-Tone.

There are numerous scratches and dents due to age, with paint wear near the endpin and overall fading.
There are signs of wear from fingering on the frets from the 1st to the 10th fret, but they still have about 1 mm of height remaining, and we have confirmed that the truss rod can be turned 60 degrees in both directions.
