A 1988 Les Paul Showcase Edition Goldtop has just arrived!

Known as the “Pre-Historic,” this Showcase Edition was produced in 1988—just before the Custom Shop was established—based on the 1956 specifications, with a limited production run of only 200 guitars at the time. Among these, the Goldtop model was produced in a run of just 40 guitars, making it an extremely rare model.

Judging by the paint line on the body top, this guitar features an offset two-piece maple top, a mahogany back, a three-piece mahogany neck, and a rosewood fingerboard. The body cutaway binding is designed to cover the maple top.
The headstock features the closed “O” Gibson logo, a “Les Paul MODEL” silkscreen, and Kluson Deluxe tuners. The truss rod cover has some chips and weather checking on the veneer, which is characteristic of instruments from this period.

The bound neck, which features a slightly thinner neck profile, is fitted with original medium-jumbo frets and rounded dish inlays.

It is equipped with two early-model “P-100 Pickups,” which were newly developed at the time. These are stacked humbuckers in a P-90 size, designed to eliminate noise (60-cycle hum) from the guitar body.
The controls are original, and the pot dates—F.Vol “1378XXX,” Tone “1378818,” B.Vol “XXXX840,” and Tone “1378818”—confirm that the guitar was manufactured in 1988.

The hardware is nickel-plated, and the bridge features a wired ABR-1 with a PAT No. relief and a steel stopbar.

While there are numerous weather checks, scratches, and dents resulting from age and use, the guitar functions perfectly. Approximately 70% of the frets remain, and although the truss rod is slightly stiff, we have confirmed that it turns 60 degrees in both directions.
