USED MUSIC MAN / '80s SABRE BASS Mod Sunburst/M [05]

This guitar features a Stingray neck swapped into a Sabre body; while it’s in player’s condition, it’s been modified to a very high standard. For this price and with this sound, I think it’s a great deal.

This model embodies the DNA of Leo Fender’s design era and can be considered another great option. Featuring the classic combination of an ash body and maple neck, it’s equipped with two large humbuckers. With series/parallel switching and a tone control circuit, it offers a wide range of sounds—from powerful lows to crisp mids. The neck displays beautiful grain, which, combined with its vintage-style finish, gives the guitar a striking appearance.

The instrument we’ve just received is a distinctive piece that combines the body of a 1979 Sabre with the neck of a 1979 StingRay. The neck joint has been modified from the original four-point to a three-point joint, suggesting that parts were replaced and modifications were made at “System Craft,” a bass specialty shop in Osaka.

While the pickups appear to be original, the volume pots have been replaced with ones from 1986 and 1981 (the third is unidentifiable), and the mini-switch and jack have also been replaced. The mini-switch, starting from the front, functions as a pickup selector, allowing for front pickup series/parallel and rear pickup series/parallel modes. It has been modified to meet modern specifications, enabling the player to enjoy a wide variety of sound variations. (Though the phase-out effect is nice, too.)

In addition to the string guide having been repositioned, the strap pins and mute have been replaced, and there is a chip on the pickguard near the neck on the 4th string side.

There is a crack at the neck joint. The neck shows fine weather checking.

The nut and frets were replaced upon arrival, and the fingerboard surface was refinished accordingly. Additionally, the truss rod nut was stripped, so it was machined to metric specifications and repaired.

The neck has a slight warp, but it does not currently affect playability.
