The Special Semi-Hollow features an H-S-H (humbucker-“single”-humbucker) pickup configuration, equipped with McCarty III pickups for the treble and bass positions, and a Narrowfield pickup for the middle position.

The McCarty III pickup encapsulates all the know-how that Paul Reed Smith and the PRS new product engineering team have cultivated in recent product development—from extensive research into vintage pickups to sound analysis and improvements in tuning technology.
The PRS McCarty III pickup is a vintage-inspired humbucker that combines a warm, rich vintage sound with a clear, vocal-like tone. The Narrowfield pickup suppresses hum while delivering the bite characteristic of single-coil pickups and a clear, powerful sound that cuts through any ensemble.

The combination of a 5-way blade switch and a mini-toggle switch for the McCarty III pickup’s coil tap creates 12 different sound variations suitable for any genre. Additionally, rolling off the tone control produces a thick, sweet sound, while rolling it up yields a sparkling tone, allowing you to enjoy a wide range of sonic variations.

Other specifications include a maple top, mahogany back, a 22-fret mahogany neck with a 25-inch scale, and a rosewood fingerboard, equipped with Phase III locking tuners and a PRS-original Gen III tremolo unit.While minimizing the volume difference between the humbucker and single-coil pickups, the semi-hollow body construction with an f-hole lends the guitar’s tone a pleasant airiness and depth.
