~A Model Refresh After 7 Years to Mark the Series’ 40th Anniversary~ The Versatile BB734A with Active/Passive Switching To mark the 40th anniversary of the series, Yamaha has introduced a new BB model—the first model refresh in seven years. The design has been reworked to create a refined, modern look while retaining the distinctive character of the “BB Series.” The body and other components have been slimmed down, improving playability.Additionally, the model features a newly adopted 3-ply (3-layer) body construction and a miter-bolted neck joint, thoroughly pursuing enhanced body resonance. In addition to improving the efficiency of string and body vibration, durability has also been enhanced, resulting in a slim yet resonant and rugged bass. Furthermore, it is equipped with a newly developed pickup that preserves the powerful, thick bass characteristic of the “BB Series” while delivering a clearer sound with greater presence.This model features an active circuit that can be switched to passive mode. <Key Features> 1. The traditional BB original shape has been updated with a modern design. Based on the silhouette of the original BB shape, the body, neck, and headstock have been slimmed down, and the pickguard design has been completely revamped. The result is a sophisticated, modern design that retains the essence of the “BB Series.” It also offers high playability alongside a sleek, smart appearance. 2. 3-Ply Construction That Enhances Body Vibration Efficiency For the “BB PRO/700 Series,” we used alder—known for its warm midrange tones—and hard maple—which produces a clear sound—as body materials, adopting a 3-ply construction where maple is sandwiched between layers of alder. This sturdy construction improves the body’s vibration efficiency, delivering a solid body resonance, rich bass, and full midrange despite the slim body. 3. “Miter Bolting Method” for a Strong Body-to-Neck Joint At the body-to-neck joint, we’ve newly adopted the “Miter Bolting Method,” which uses four screws to secure the neck vertically from the back of the body, plus two screws that secure the neck end at a 45-degree angle from the back of the body.This increases the contact area between the neck and body, ensuring a tighter fit that not only enhances the neck’s strength but also minimizes the loss of string vibration, resulting in a clear sound and excellent sustain. Furthermore, string vibrations are efficiently transmitted throughout the entire body, producing a rich, resonant tone that makes the body and neck feel like a single unit. 4. Newly Developed Pickups Each model is equipped with a pickup specifically developed in-house to suit its design.While retaining the thick rock sound characteristic of the “BB Series,” we have achieved an even clearer sound with sharper definition. The result is a sound with excellent projection that stands out within a band. 5. Unique “String-Through-Body” Construction The unique “String-Through-Body” construction, which was well-received in previous models, has also been adopted in the “BB PRO/700/400 Series.”In a typical string-through-body system, the strings pass through the back of the body directly beneath the saddle. However, the “BB PRO/700/400 Series” features a design where the strings pass through the bottom of the body—which is cut at an angle—at a 45-degree angle. This reduces stress on the strings at the saddle, significantly minimizes loss of string vibration, and efficiently transmits the vibration to the body. The bridge is a convertible type, compatible with both the through-body string routing and the standard top-loading method, where strings pass through the bottom of the bridge.
