A Rare "Radio King" from the Late 1940s

The Gene Krupa Radio King, a legendary instrument crafted from solid maple that Slingerland is proud to present.
Based on the badge, it is believed to have been manufactured between 1948 and 1950.

A model synonymous with solid maple snares, it recently made headlines with the release of a reissue—but this is a Radio King from the generation that can truly be called the original.
Featuring a Stick Chopper hoop, Clamshell strainer, Slingerland Beavertail lugs, and more
—this is a highly valuable vintage snare drum featuring iconic parts from the 1940s.

Unfortunately, there are about three cracks in the lugs. While this doesn’t currently affect tuning, it raises concerns about long-term durability (replacement parts for this model are available but have a lead time of about six months). Additionally, the original hoop on the top is slightly warped—or perhaps it’s incompatible with modern heads—which caused unstable tuning, so I’ve replaced it with a steel Stick Chopper hoop from the current Radio King model.

All other parts besides the head are original.
Since the shell was also slightly oversized, the playing surface has been fitted with a Lemo Classic Fit head.

In addition to the parts mentioned above, there is overall discoloration and some damage to the covering.
—while these are to be expected given the drum’s age, the shell itself shows no signs of damage, and its distinctive overtones and fat sound remain intact.
As this is a snare drum that’s nearly 80 years old, there are certainly areas that require careful handling, but it’s a rare instrument that allows you to experience the deep, original sound unique to its era.
