An early 1970s UNI-VIBE that retains the characteristics of the HONEY model
The SHIN-EI / UNI-VIBE is a historic modulation effect that uses a unique optical circuit combining an incandescent lamp and a photocell to produce an organic, three-dimensional flutter distinct from typical chorus or phaser effects. This unit features the thin “UNI-VIBE” logo characteristic of early HONEY-type models and comes with a Double Rubber foot controller.Since the enclosure bears an early-model “45.3” stamp indicating the Showa year and month, this unit is identified as an early SHIN-EI model manufactured around March Showa 45 (March 1970). Its appeal lies in the unique sound characteristic of vintage UNI-VIBE units, where low-end pulsation and high-end phasing intertwine in a complex interplay.
The exterior shows signs of wear appropriate for its age, such as scratches and scuffs. Several of the screws securing the rear panel have been replaced. Inside the unit, there is a handwritten note that reads “3 CAPS REPLACED 9/19/74,” suggesting that three capacitors were replaced on September 19, 1974.On the circuit board, multiple replaced electrolytic capacitors can be seen, and the black and brown wires connecting the power transformer to the board show signs of repair via re-soldering. Based on the sealing condition of the mounting points, the power transformer itself is believed to be original. The output jack has been replaced. An additional trimpot has been installed on the light-shielding cover of the optical circuit section. Since the light-shielding cover is secured with adhesive, the condition of the internal lamp and photocell, as well as any replacement history, cannot be verified.The included Double Rubber foot controller has been modified to feature a detachable cable. As a result, some internal parts have been replaced and the housing has been modified. Additionally, there is a partial crack in the effect cancel switch on the heel side. Both the main unit and the foot controller show signs of repairs, part replacements, and modifications in multiple places; while this is a “player’s condition” unit prioritizing practicality, there are currently no issues with its operation.
