Named after Ted McCarty, who made a great contribution to the musical instrument industry, the McCarty model—a collaboration between Paul and Ted—blends PRS technology and design with the essence of legendary instruments from the golden age of the electric guitar.

The 22-fret neck, featuring binding, is moderately thick to enhance tone and sustain. The combination of tone controls and a 3-way toggle switch plus a mini-toggle switch enables a wide range of sound shaping.Furthermore, with sound quality in mind, this model features PRS’s original Gen III tremolo unit and newly designed Phase III tuners with wing buttons. It is equipped with the McCarty III pickups, inspired by vintage guitars, which produce a warm, rich vintage tone.

These McCarty III pickups embody all the know-how that Paul Reed Smith and the PRS new product engineering team have cultivated in recent years—from extensive research into vintage pickups to sound analysis and improvements in tuning technology.

In the late 1980s, Paul consulted with Ted regarding guitar design and manufacturing techniques. Since then, Ted has become not only Paul’s mentor but also a dear friend to Paul and all the staff he met at PRS. The McCarty, released in 1994, is a model into which Paul poured his heart and soul, incorporating the techniques and knowledge passed down from Ted McCarty as well as his own experience as a guitar builder.
