PRS guitars, with the exception of some models, have long used less lacquer and more acrylics and polyurethane to achieve a hard but thin coating, which has been the standard for this brand. There is no doubt that this was a rational coating that combined the advantages of both polyurethane and lacquer.

However, it is easy to imagine that the reason why they decided to use lacquer coating is because they pursued further sound improvement rather than cost and production efficiency. The price of electric guitars has tended to increase year by year for all brands, but PRS guitars, despite their high quality, have remained at a reasonable price and have remained almost unchanged for some time. The reason for this is that the V-12 finish and previous paints had both high production efficiency and good sound, which no other manufacturer could imitate.

As mentioned above, PRS, a company that never stops evolving, finally abandoned production efficiency and shifted its emphasis to sound improvement. The result is this Custom 24 with 2020 specifications.

The "Tweaked" Phase III Locking Tuners, which were used on the McCarty 594, are generously used for the tuners. The distance between the peg button and the shaft is adjustable, which allows you to control the way the machine head vibrates (making the sound more or less aggressive).

The 85/15 pickups have also been changed to TCI. The wiring of the conventional 85/15 pickups has been revised, and the sound has changed dramatically just by changing the way they are wound.

By changing the finish, tuners, and pickups, the clean sound has become noticeably clearer and softer sounding than the previous model. The balance is a little closer to the bass side, giving the impression of calmness. In particular, the crunch sound is very pleasant, and it feels a little more like a McCarty-type model. To be honest, I was not sure if I could go this far! I was wondering if the output had simply been lowered.

I thought that the output might have been simply lowered, but for some reason, it seems to be good at high-gain as well, and even when distorted strongly, the sound is never destroyed. The distortion is firm and clean, and the long sustain is still there. This is probably due to the TCI.

If I had to sum it up in a few words, I would say that a versatile guitar has come back as a more versatile guitar, but if you actually compare the two guitars, you can see that the sound has improved tremendously.
