USED Gibson / J-160E Sunburst [Vintage/1968]

A vintage J-160E from 1968

The J-160E was introduced in 1954. At that time, it featured a solid top and 19 frets, but starting in 1955, it switched to a laminated top and 20 frets.
This particular instrument dates from the so-called “14-degree headstock angle, narrow neck” era, when Gibson guitars underwent a drastic specification change around 1965. Furthermore, it features the rare “screw-mounted long pickguard” specification, which existed for only a short period until 1968–69.
Also, the bridge changed from an upper-belly to a down-belly design around 1968, and this particular guitar features the down-belly design.
Furthermore, since adjustable bridges were discontinued in 1969, this guitar was built just before that change.

Made at the Kalamazoo factory in the USA
It features a round-shouldered body with a laminated spruce top and mahogany sides and back, equipped with a P-90 pickup, and the volume and tone controls are operated via the top knobs.
The rosewood down-belly bridge is equipped with rosewood adjustable saddles.
The mahogany neck, with a nut width of approximately 39.5 mm and a Gibson scale length, features a rosewood fingerboard and binding.
It is equipped with two-knob KULUSON DELEXE tuners.
Based on the serial number, it was manufactured in 1968, and judging by its specifications, it is believed to be a model from around 1968–69.

* At least the nut, frets, and bridge pins have been replaced. An additional strap pin has been added to the neck heel.
* When the strings are loosened, the torque on the E-string peg becomes looser than that of the other pegs, but this does not affect playability.

Serviced at a renowned guitar workshop.
The volume and tone pots have been cleaned, the bridge has been repaired for peeling, the back bracing has been re-glued, and the frets have been leveled.
String grounding has been performed on the underside of the bridge.

Weather checking is visible throughout the body, neck, and headstock, giving it a vintage presence.
There are numerous signs of aging, including paint changes, dents (including areas where the paint has chipped), and various scratches.
There are deep dents on the top, and touch-up marks are visible. There are also signs of a previous bridge re-glue job.
The binding on the body and neck has uneven edges and shows signs of having been re-glued.
Although there is significant wear and signs of aging, the truss rod still has plenty of adjustment left, and there is ample fret life remaining, so playability is not an issue.

While the J-160E is known for its design that intentionally suppresses natural resonance to prevent feedback, it really shines when plugged into an amp!
Chord work is a given, but what I’d particularly recommend is solo playing with single notes and double-note passages!

* There are scratches, stains, rust, and a chip on the top of the case, but it is still perfectly functional for storage.
