1957 marked the very beginning of the Les Paul’s adoption of double-coil humbucking pickups—a pivotal year that established the foundational sound of the Les Paul that continues to this day. This instrument is a Historic Reissue from Gibson Custom, meticulously recreated down to the finest details based on that original 1957 Goldtop.
The body top is made of two-piece plain maple, the body back and neck are mahogany, and the fingerboard is Indian rosewood. In addition to its traditional construction without weight relief, hide glue is used to bond the maple top to the fingerboard.
The finish is “Double Gold,” crafted using a method that allows the color to age gracefully, just like vintage models. The “Darkback” specification features a deep brown finish extending from the body back to the neck back, creating a striking contrast with the dazzling gold top and giving the guitar a bold, distinctive look that sets it apart from standard Goldtops.
The neck shape is a 50s Rounded Medium C with moderate thickness, balancing a solid grip with smooth fingering.
It is equipped with two unpoted Custombuckers featuring Alnico III magnets. With their delicate response to picking and open harmonic richness, they deliver the expressive range typical of 1950s-style humbuckers—from clear, well-defined clean tones to drive sounds with rich mids and a lustrous quality.The front pickup delivers a sweet, deep tone, while the bridge pickup offers a focused attack and excellent projection; together, they produce a juicy midrange harmonic blend in the split position and an exceptional sound that will captivate any guitarist.
It is built with parts befitting a vintage reissue, including a No-Wire ABR-1 bridge, a lightweight aluminum stopbar, and Kluson Single Line / Single Ring-style tuners.
A Gibson Custom Switchplate Medallion is mounted on the back of the body. Due to the VOS finish, it is difficult to distinguish between the patina present since manufacture and any scratches that may have been added later; however, the guitar is in excellent condition with virtually no signs of actual use.
It comes complete with all the original accessories, including the certificate of authenticity, the genuine Brown/Pink Lifton Reissue 5-Latch hard case, Historic Reissue hang tags, and the Historic Brown switchplate.
This guitar combines the Goldtop’s classic appeal, the rarity of the Darkback, and the rich, responsive tone produced by the Custombuckers.
