A 1984 Les Paul Custom has just arrived!
1984 marked the end of the transitional period between the "Norlin era"—when Norlin Corporation owned and operated Gibson—and the current management structure.
This particular guitar represents a symbolic period when the Kalamazoo factory was closed and the newly established Gibson USA, manufactured at the then-state-of-the-art Nashville factory, was in full swing.

The wood configuration features a maple top, mahogany back, one-piece mahogany neck, and an ebony fingerboard. It features a neck shape that’s slightly thinner and close to a Medium C profile for excellent playability, along with “Medium Flat Frets”—wide, low, and flat—that evoke the “Fretless Wonder” trend of the 1970s.

Additionally, it features specifications unique to this era, such as tuners with a built-in unique winder—a small crank protruding from the knob that allows for quick string winding during changes, which is sure to appeal to guitarists—as well as diamond-shaped strap pins.

The pickups are “New PAF” (engraved, numbered humbuckers) designed by Tim Shaw. They offer a clear, mellow, and moderately sweet vintage-like tone reminiscent of vintage PAFs, along with a crisp, punchy sound that cuts through the mix.

Overall, there are significant signs of wear, including scratches, dents, buckle marks, chipped paint, discoloration, lacquer burn, and weather checking. Additionally, there is wear on the fretboard surface from playing, peeling paint on the back of the neck, a cracked screw hole on the back panel, and a missing back cover on the 5th-string tuner.

Additionally, since the guitar was originally equipped with low-profile frets, they have not been filed down, and indentations remain on the frets. To preserve the original condition, these frets have not been replaced.
* While this does not significantly affect playability, please be aware that due to the indentations, you may feel a slight catch or resistance when playing.

The neck-side escutcheon, control knobs, and the plastic washers on the 4th-string tuner have been replaced with metal ones.

While it shows significant signs of use, the natural relics that result from extensive play—such as widespread wear, weather checking, the patina on the binding, and paint wear on the back of the neck—contribute to a look of distinguished character.

This is a remarkably lightweight example for its era, and the critical components—such as the pickups and pots—remain in their original condition. It’s a guitar that lets you enjoy the period-appropriate specifications of its tuning machines and the rich, distinctive sound of the Tim Shaw PAF pickups!
