In 1957, Gibson designed three new guitars with futuristic looks to bring a fresh, modern design to its product lineup. One of them was the Futura, designed alongside the Flying V and the Moderne.While many guitarists may not be familiar with the Futura, there are likely very few who don’t know its direct successor—the Explorer. The Futura bears a striking resemblance to the modern Explorer, but it featured a more angular body shape and a split-V headstock. This headstock design was exclusive to the very earliest Explorers, predating the transition to the now-famous scimitar-shaped headstock.The Futura was never actually released commercially in the late 1950s; only a handful of prototypes were made at the time, and of those, only a few ever made it to the market. As a result, it is extremely rare, second only to the Moderne in terms of rarity—a genuine 1950s-era example of which has never been discovered or authenticated.

While the early Flying V and Explorer models released in 1958 featured Corina wood bodies, the very first Futura prototypes were crafted from mahogany.Compared to the brighter tone of Corina, mahogany offers a slightly warmer sound. It is also more readily available than the rare Corina, making it the ideal wood for modern rock and metal players who prefer the dense tone unique to all-mahogany construction.

Now, Gibson Custom is proud to announce the 1957 Mahogany Futura Reissue, a faithful reproduction of a rare 1950s Futura prototype.This model features a mahogany body with the original Futura shape based on vintage specifications, a mahogany neck with a 50s vintage profile, and the original split-V headstock equipped with reissue-spec Kluson single-ring tuners. The unbound Indian rosewood fingerboard features 22 reissue frets and cellulose dot inlays.

In terms of sound, it is equipped with two non-potted Custombucker humbucker pickups using Alnico 3 magnets, a 2-volume/1-tone configuration with CTS potentiometers, and is hand-wired with a "Phone Book" tone capacitor.The Antique Natural nitrocellulose lacquer finish and gold hardware feature a VOS (Vintage-Ole) finish, evoking the character of a late 1950s New Old Stock (unused vintage) guitar. It also comes with a Lifton Historic Reissue brown and pink hardshell case.

The guitar is in good condition; there is one dent on the side of the body, but it is otherwise in near-mint condition. All accessories are included.
