The Les Paul Custom was released in 1954 as the top-of-the-line Les Paul model.
Since many Les Paul players at the time wore tuxedos, the guitar was finished in black ebony to make their hands stand out, and featured gold hardware and an ebony fingerboard for a more refined and elegant look.

Production of the single-cut Les Paul was discontinued in 1960, but its popularity was reignited by the music scene of the late 1960s, leading to the revival of the Custom and Standard models as reissues in the summer of 1968.

Regarding the reissued Custom models from this period, while their appearance carried on the design of the 1950s Custom, the elements shaping their sound were modified from those of the 1950s Custom.
Specifications inherited from the Sunburst Les Paul—such as a body construction featuring a maple top and mahogany back (compared to the one-piece mahogany body of the 1950s) and dual humbucking pickups—were adopted. As a result, these features aligned perfectly with the trends of the rock movement at the time and defined the Custom’s image going forward.
Even today, more than 50 years later, it remains a model coveted by rock guitarists.

It is equipped with two 57 Classic pickups, one of Gibson Custom’s signature models.
"Authentic" refers to the finish equivalent to today’s VOS, and the guitar originally came with a finish that gives it a well-worn look.
While there are scratches, dents, and rust on the hardware throughout the body, the playability, electronics, and truss rod are all in good condition.

The use of nickel hardware gives this guitar a more sophisticated look than a standard Les Paul Custom.
