A Classic Op-Amp-Based Overdrive

While the Design-A-Drive is based on a classic op-amp-based low-to-mid-gain overdrive, it features unique “Width” and “Edge” controls that allow you to reshape the circuit’s frequency response to suit any setup, enabling intuitive tone shaping across a wide range of sounds.

With overdrive pedals that are replicas of specific models, we often hear users express minor frustrations—such as wanting a bit more body or feeling the lows are too prominent—depending on their guitar or amp. However, Design-A-Drive is an overdrive pedal with a versatile, authentic tone that we can confidently recommend to users who are feeling a bit jaded by such limitations!

"Edge" controls the top end of the frequency spectrum, simultaneously adjusting two separate filters (a gentle treble roll-off and a more aggressive cut in the high-presence range) to influence the aggressiveness of the circuit’s hard-clipping diodes. Combining these three functions, it does exactly what its name implies. You can precisely adjust the exact amount of bite, grit, and brightness you need.

"Width" does exactly what its name implies. This 6-position rotary switch reshapes the pedal’s midrange response, gradually lowering the midrange peak and adding low end as you move from "Thin" to "Fat." This control lets you instantly shape your tone while specifying the frequency spectrum where the amp is pushed.

The "Gain" and "Level" controls were designed to be equally versatile and widely applicable. Even when you lower the gain, sufficient level remains, allowing the pedal to function as a powerful tone shaper and clean boost—either on its own or combined with other drive or fuzz pedals.
