We have received a recent Gibson Custom Shop Murphy Lab Collection 1964 ES-335 reissue.
The manufacturing date can be confirmed as 2024 based on the date (5/6/24) listed on the included pre-pack checklist.
The aging finish is “Ultra Light Aged,” which elegantly recreates the condition of an exceptional vintage guitar.
In addition to natural-looking paint cracks across the entire body, minor cosmetic damage such as dents and paint chips is rendered with meticulous artistry, leaving one in no doubt of the manufacturer’s genuine respect for vintage Gibson guitars.
The haze and scuffs that convey the degree of finish wear are also masterfully integrated with the aging techniques; purchasing and owning this particular instrument may be the best way to truly experience the artistic craftsmanship of the Murphy Lab Collection firsthand.
The metal parts, too, are finished with a gentle, subtle patina that aligns with the V.O.S. (Vintage Original Spec) finish.
Regarding the progression of the exterior condition, due to Murphy Lab’s aging specifications, it is difficult to accurately determine the extent of play wear; therefore, this report is based solely on our best estimates.
Due to the circumstances mentioned above, we have rated the condition as “B+”; however, you may find it to be a relatively recent model with a beautiful, clean appearance.
Consequently, there are no signs of heavy use or rough handling, giving the impression of a rare used instrument that appears to have never been played seriously.
Furthermore, there are no signs of unusual soldering work on the control components, so it appears to be in fully original, “solder-virgin” condition, including the pickups.
Also... While the official color option at this time is limited to Sixties Cherry, the finish on this particular guitar is Tea Burst.
Considering all of this, I can’t help but feel that this is a rare and excellent used instrument.
Parts That May Have Been Replaced
While the saddles on the ABR-1 bridge may have originally been made of nylon, the saddles on this particular guitar are nickel-plated brass. Brass saddles are known for producing a stable, classic tone, and their durability is also a plus, offering peace of mind.
